As architects based in Carlisle, we created this concept for a home in Lanercost, Cumbria, inspired by the historic character of Lanercost Priory. The project explores how traditional Cumbrian architecture can inform modern design while staying respectful to its setting.
The Priory’s pointed arches, prominent in its north aisle and clerestory arcades, became the foundation for the building’s form and rhythm. We reinterpreted these features with clean, modern detailing to create a home that feels timeless but contemporary. Every proportion and line was considered to ensure the design complements, rather than competes with, the surrounding landscape.
A curved southern wall follows the path of the sun, allowing light to track across the interior throughout the day. This simple gesture transforms how the spaces feel, filling them with warmth and natural light. The curvature also softens the building’s presence within its rural setting, creating a calm and inviting character.
Our approach focuses on designing buildings that respond to both place and purpose. In Lanercost, that meant balancing heritage with modern living—respecting the architectural language of Cumbria while introducing contemporary performance and comfort.
As Cumbrian architects, we believe every project should feel rooted in its landscape and history. The Lanercost concept captures that balance: a design shaped by local materials, light, and context. It represents our wider ethos—thoughtful architecture that connects people to their environment and stands confidently in its time and place.
