The clients approached Ashwood Design Associates to explore the conversion of a traditional brick-built barn in Cumbria. The proposal transforms the existing partly converted annex and garage into a fully self-contained two-bedroom dwelling. This allows for multi-generational living within the family.

The existing barn holds a rich story. Constructed from handmade bricks fired on site in an old kiln, it remains in sound condition. It forms an important part of the property’s history. Our proposal retains and enhances these original materials. We use reclaimed brickwork and matching slate to maintain the traditional character. This is complemented by aluminium-framed windows and timber detailing for a refined, contemporary feel.

A modest single-storey sunroom and entrance porch extension replace the former greenhouse. This increases the footprint by only 17m² while improving the flow and daylight within the home. The design also reconfigures the existing garage into living space and a utility area. Vertical black timber cladding references the aesthetic of the original barn doors.

The project includes enhancements to the existing access point, garden boundaries, and parking provision. These ensure the new dwelling functions independently while retaining the open rural character of the site. The result will be a carefully balanced blend of heritage, practicality, and sustainability. It creates a modern countryside home rooted in the fabric of its original agricultural setting.
